Richard Dommett’s service to the canal was recognised by Newport City Council by naming of Lock 21 as Dommett’s Lock .
Invited guests and MBACT volunteers witnessed the unveiling of the name post and the new lock gates installed recently. The design of the lock gates sprung from an idea Richard had, and the modular lock gates are no longer made of wood, and their projected life span is over 100 years compared with the traditional wooden gates which need to be replaced every 20- 30 years.
The works on the gates and the relining of the canal continue the maintenance of the canal which complements the work Newport City Council have done around the pond and centre at Fourteen Locks.
Thanks to the tea room staff for the buffet they provided, and Noel Fitzpatrick for supporting the event. Also to Laura and Jodie for coordinating the event.
