Himalayan Balsam at Ty Coch

Himalayan Balsam was identified on the canal south of Cwmbran, and our volunteers began removing some of it today at Ty Coch. We won’t be able to complete this because the plant will begin producing seeds soon and work will have to stop but our volunteers will be ready to go next year.

Trial run for pontoon

Several volunteers had a great day at TyCoch today, the pontoon had it’s first outing when we took it waterside for a trial. Almost all the preparation, training and health and safety is now in place so we are nearly ready for launch.

MBACT at Cwmbran Big Event

Cwmbran Big Event was the first ‘outing’ for the Welfare Van and a display section of our new pontoon.

Gareth Davies, Clerk of Cwmbran Community Council, saw the section of pontoon which will be used to help clear vegetation from the offside of the canal in the Cwmbran area once the environmental restrictions allow.

The new welfare van was also present which will allow transport of the team to the work sites, and provide welfare facilities when we are working on remote sections.

Torfaen Council tackles offside vegetation

MBACT is delighted to see the work being undertaken between Five Locks Basin and Bridge 47 on the Mon & Brec Canal. Contractors have been appointed by Torfaen County Borough Council to cut back overgrown offside vegetation which was impeding navigation. The specialist contractors, who hail from Bridgwater, have been assisted using a paddle-wheeled boat equipped with cutting arm and rake, well suited for this sort of operation. The work … Read more

New footbridge is lifted into position next to lock 21 on the Crumlin Arm of the Mon and Brec canal

A new footbridge was lowered into place just below Cefn Top Lock 21 next to the Fourteen Locks Canal Centre on Monday 6th November 2023.
