The Canal and Countryside Volunteer Group

Allt-yr-yn Nature Reserve, The Ridgeway, Newport

The Canal and Countryside Volunteer Group is a joint partnership between our Trust based at Fourteen Locks Canal Centre, and Newport City Council. The Group was set up with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The project has proven to be a great success.

The Group meets every Thursday, from 10am till 3.30pm. Work is done either around the Fourteen Locks flight of locks on the Crumlin Branch of the Mon & Brec canal, or at the nearby Allt-yr-Yn Nature Reserve, clearing undergrowth and invasive species, maintaining paths and fences, whilst creating natural wildlife habitats.

Volunteers are of all ages and backgrounds from Newport and the surrounding area.

Newport City Council Countryside Wardens plan the work, provide training, supply tools, and dispose of cleared undergrowth through Council recycling facilities.

This last month work has been focusing at the Allt-yr-yn Nature Reserve so as to not disturb birds nesting near the canal.
